The Finland Chamber of Commerce has appointed Master of Laws (LL.M.) Santtu Turunen as the Secretary General of the Arbitration Institute of the Finland Chamber of Commerce (the “FAI”) as of 1 June 2019.
Turunen will join the FAI from the University of Helsinki. He has published several arbitration related books and articles. In addition to other teaching, he has acted as coach of the Vis Moot team of the University of Helsinki. Further, he has served as an arbitrator in domestic and international cases. At the FAI, Turunen will be responsible for developing and coordinating the FAI’s activities both in Finland and internationally.
“Arbitration in Finland is on a roll. The FAI has developed into a competitive and dynamic player in the field of arbitration. The FAI is currently more international than ever before. The Finnish arbitration community is broad and enthusiastic. This is a great foundation that we can build on to tap the full potential of Finnish arbitration”, says Turunen.
Heidi Merikalla-Teir, who has served as the Director of Dispute Resolution Services at the Finland Chamber of Commerce and as the Secretary General of the FAI, has been appointed as the new Managing Partner of the Finnish law firm Merilampi Attorneys Ltd. as of 1 June 2019.
“Merikalla-Teir has developed the operations of the FAI significantly. During her term, the FAI has become more international, and the FAI Mediation Rules have been launched, the latter providing a cost-efficient alternative for resolving business disputes. We wish Heidi every success in her new position”, says Juho Romakkaniemi, CEO of the Finland Chamber of Commerce. “At the same time, we welcome Santtu Turunen to his new position as the Secretary General of the FAI to continue the work done. The biggest challenge in the near future will be to steer the reform of the Finnish Arbitration Act so that it becomes a factor for improving Finland’s international competitiveness”.
Arbitration is an alternative dispute resolution method to litigation in state courts. It is generally considered as the most effective means of resolving both domestic and international commercial disputes. Any dispute that can be settled by agreement between the parties may be referred to arbitration for final decision.
The FAI administers the settlement of disputes in domestic and international arbitrations and mediations governed by its Rules. In addition, the FAI may be designated as appointing authority without subjecting the arbitration to the provisions of the Rules. Since 1919, the FAI has operated in connection with the Finland Chamber of Commerce. However, being an autonomous and impartial arbitration body, it carries out its functions independently of the Finland Chamber of Commerce.
