Solja Seppänen started as a part-time trainee at the FAI. Seppänen is a sixth-year law student from the University of Turku currently participating in the masters thesis project titled “Theory and Practice of Law of Obligations” lead by Professor Mika Viljanen.
At the FAI, Seppänen will assist in case management, communications and organisation of events. Further, Seppänen will participate in various research tasks and general office work.
“A traineeship at the FAI gives me a unique insight into the dispute resolution market. It gives me an opportunity to learn about theory and practice of arbitration, not just through one or two cases but from the perspective of a number of cases pending at the Institute. Further, I have already met many of the biggest stars of the arbitration scene in Finland and started to develop my arbitration network at conferences”, Seppänen says.
The FAI Secretary General, Santtu Turunen, welcomes Solja Seppänen to the Institute and underlines the many functions of a trainee programme for the FAI.
”We are happy to have Solja join the FAI team. I am sure that Solja will benefit a lot from the case management team’s expertise on what arbitration is about. For the FAI, the trainee programme is not primarily about having more hands in the office but more about a way to give back to the community and introduce new talented and enthusiastic people to arbitration. The FAI will continue to develop ways to create stepping stones to the arbitration industry”, Turunen says.
The FAI has published the FAI Award Checklist and the FAI Tax Guidelines in the English language.
The FAI Award Checklist aims to support the arbitral tribunal in the drafting of arbitral awards under the Arbitration Rules and the Rules for Expedited Arbitration of the Finland Chamber of Commerce. The checklist is not exhaustive nor binding on the arbitral tribunal but intended to give general recommendations for a high-quality and enforceable award.
The purpose of the FAI Tax Guidelines is to draw the arbitrators’ attention to tax issues related to the arbitrator’s fee and expenses. The guidelines, however, do not exempt the arbitrator from verifying the tax treatment of his/her fee and expenses.
Both publications are also available in Finnish on our website.

YACF Blog: Young Arbitration Club Finland (YACF) and Capítulo Nórdico-Báltico del Club Español del Arbitraje (CEA) joint conference on the eve of the 15th IFCAI Biennial Conference in Helsinki
Sunny late spring weather welcomed the participants in Helsinki as more than 200 legal professionals assembled to the city to attend the 15th IFCAI Biennial Conference, organised in the Finnish capital on 23 May 2019. The topic of the IFCAI conference, which this year substituted the traditional Helsinki International Arbitration Day, headlined ‘Roles and Responsibilities of Key Stakeholders in Conflict Resolution – Finding the Right Balance to Maximise Strategic and Effective Conflict Resolution’. Since arbitration lawyers are generally known for their enthusiasm for seminars, the IFCAI conference also inspired an energetic flow of side events, including the Young Arbitration Club Finland (YACF) and Club Español del Arbitraje (CEA) Capítulo Nórdico-Báltico joint conference on the topic of ‘Arbitration hearings – More than arguments and facts. What else is in the room?’ This blog post will provide a short round-up of the YACF-CEA seminar’s discussion.
