Henrik Sajakorpi has been appointed FAI Secretary General as of 18 March 2024. The FAI interviewed Henrik and asked him to share his thoughts about the new role.
Welcome to the FAI! Could you share with us a bit about your professional journey leading up to this point?
Certainly – I kicked off my legal career at Roschier, Attorneys Ltd. approximately nine years ago, focusing on dispute resolution, including international commercial arbitration. Working alongside some of the brightest minds in the legal field, I gained invaluable insights into sophisticated legal strategies, conflict management, and problem solving in high-stakes scenarios. This experience instilled in me a deep commitment to integrity, excellence, and inclusiveness, values that I carry into my new role at the FAI.
What inspired you to specialise in dispute resolution?
My interest in dispute resolution was sparked during my studies at the University of Helsinki’s Faculty of Law, particularly through participation in the 21st Willem C. Vis Moot. This experience exposed me to the complexities of international commercial arbitration and the satisfaction of navigating intricate legal challenges. The field’s dynamic nature and the uniqueness of each case, requiring innovative thinking and perpetual learning, fascinated me and inspired my decision to pursue work in dispute resolution after graduation.
What are you looking forward to in your new position?
I’m particularly excited about the upcoming application of the FAI Arbitration Rules 2024 in the 32nd Willem C. Vis Moot for the academic year 2024–2025. This event not only underscores our commitment to excellence in commercial arbitration globally but also showcases the expertise within the Finnish arbitration community. It presents a prime opportunity to advance the FAI’s mission and strengthen our legacy of success.
In your view, what are the FAI’s strengths, and where do you see opportunities for further growth?
The FAI has several key features that contribute to its success. Firstly, its expeditious and flexible process ensures efficiency. Additionally, the FAI’s agile structure enables seamless administration of cases while at the same time meeting high international standards and best practices. Moreover, the FAI, like the Finnish arbitration community in general, operates with a strong commitment to integrity, which is another significant asset. Looking ahead, we aim to attract even more international parties to arbitrate under the FAI Rules, thereby expanding our global reach and impact.
How do you plan to seize the opportunities that lie ahead for the FAI?
To seize the opportunities ahead for the FAI, we are adopting several proactive measures. For instance, we recognize the significant potential of the upcoming Willem C. Vis Moot. Additionally, we are planning and implementing new training programmes. These initiatives, among others, aim to promote the FAI’s expertise and capabilities and enhance the skills of aspiring arbitration professionals.
