FAI 2024 Statistics Published

4.4.2025 News

The Finland Arbitration Institute’s 2024 case statistics are now available, highlighting a year of steady case flow and international reach. The number of new cases increased by 5.6% from the previous year.

International cases accounted for 26.6% of the caseload, with parties from a wide range of jurisdictions. The most common nationalities included Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Lithuania, and Germany, alongside parties from outside Europe, including the United States and China. The most frequently disputed contract types were service agreements, construction agreements, and sale and purchase agreements.

The median duration of arbitrations conducted under the FAI Arbitration Rules in 2024 was 9 months, measured from the transfer of the case file to the arbitral tribunal to the final award. For arbitrations under the FAI Expedited Rules, the median was 3.4 months. These figures underscore the efficiency of FAI arbitrations.

Arbitrator appointments by the FAI continued to reflect a broad geographic range. Among the ten most common nationalities of appointed arbitrators were Finland, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. In terms of gender balance, 45% of arbitrators appointed by the FAI in 2024 were women.

Total disputed values have continued to rise over recent years. Compared to 2020, the figures for 2024 increased by nearly 40 percent. While the FAI does not publish or otherwise disclose data on individual disputed amounts or value ranges, nor provide such data to any third-party surveys, reports, or other publications, the caseload reflects the evolving needs of businesses operating in the Nordic and international markets.
